We all use a multitude of products in our lives and wonder how some of them can withstand pressure and wear and tear. These are just regular appliances with good quality materials used in them. However, there is something that holds their casings together with ultimate resistance. To understand better, you might have seen machines, automobiles, toys, home appliances, and tools which work great for decades. They neither lose their strength nor their properties. There is something that works like a lynchpin in holding those appliances well. They are metal inserts. Now, what are these metal inserts, and how do they work?
Let us tell you that metal inserts are available in different types. Brass inserts are the most common, along with stainless steel types. However, you can find some other metals also as per your cost and application limit. Meanwhile, you can have a look at it in detail for better comprehension.
Metal nuts or screws, which are used to hold plastic components together, are called plastic inserts. They are installed inside the plastic enclosures and casings to let both sides hold together. Not every type of plastic can be used for it, only thermoplastic and thermoset plastic are suitable for this. In many industries, like machines, automobiles, tools, toys, and household goods, plastic inserts play a key role. With the help of plastic inserts, casings can bear vibrations and shocks without losing their grip. Without the plastic inserts, it is not easy to lock plastic parts with each other.
This type of brass insert has a collar at the top, which helps to hold inside the plastic components. Flanged inserts are good for tightening the bolt inside a plastic plate. This helps manufacturers tighten the parts of toys and household goods in a foolproof way.
It is similar to other types but has a seamless look. It has a slightly conical shape, which helps it adjust inside the plastic casing. The tapered insert gives a stronger grip to the nut when it is fastened. Many industries use it for several appliances, casings, and enclosures.
The threaded type has more treaded area than the other types. It can hold the plastic better and also provide resistance to vibration inside the plastic components. If you look at their surface, they have a kind of mesh design, which helps them to adjust themselves inside the thermoplastic when heated. After they cool down, they can have a much stronger grip with that.
There are a few methods of installing metal inserts in thermoplastic components. Since thermoplastic and thermoset plastic are used for this insertion, there are three methods for that. All three methods have similar methods but with a difference in temperature and force. You can read below to understand better.
The first type is the cold-press method, which is the basic method of installing inserts into plastic objects. In this method, the machine pushes the inserts inside the plastic hole without any heat or vibration. It is a cheap method that helps against soft plastic products. You will not have to use any heat to melt the plastic hole’s border to accept the inserts. This is just a simple press, which uses heavy force to install it.
The next method is the heat-staking method. In this method, the metal inserts are pushed inside the plastic with the help of heat. Just like the cold press but with the addition of heat. This method adds up the heat in the insert and lets the insert slide into the plastic easily. This requires less force than the cold press because half of the effort was already made by heat. The heating process melts the borders of plastic holes and lets them receive metal inserts easily. Once they are inserted, they cool down to make a bond with plastic. They get a firm grip on plastic after they cool down.
This method is about placing inserts in the plastic with the help of force and vibration. The vibration helps to create heat inside the insert and also applies force to it. This is kind of a combination of force and heat. The vibration helps inserts to adjust inside the plastic, which makes it different from other methods. The plastic hole, which receives the metal insert, is smaller in diameter than the inserts. It helps the plastic have a strong grip on the screws of the inserts.
These were some words about metal inserts for thermoplastic types. From the types to the installation methods, we have tried to cover every basic information for you. After it, you will be able to understand better before you enter the market to buy them. Besides, these inserts are available for wood and metal appliances too.
